“Life seems to go on without effort when I'm filled with music” - George Eliot

For a long time I have wanted to write about music, but I was unsure about what exactly to write about music. So I’m just going to write about what music means to me.

I suggest you listen to a song as you read this, my suggestion is WFM by Realestk. That's what I'm listening to as I write to you.

I have loved music since I was a child. Then I was under grand delusions that I was very sonorous, just like I thought I was a mad dancer. Of course, my friends told me I was always off key, and my voice was nothing to write home about, but I dismissed their disapproval and chalked it up as jealousy. Who wouldn't be jealous of my nightingale voice?

Yeah, delulu is the solulu plixxx. When I got to junior secondary school, I offered Music as a compulsory subject. You cannot imagine how disappointed I was when I realized I was not good at playing any musical instrument, not even a recorder. In fact, I was awful at it. I just could not grasp the concept of F Sharp and B Flat.

By the time I was in senior secondary school, I was more interested in Hiptv and Soundcity than Telemundo or Nickelodeon like my mates. I  guess I channeled my disappointment at not being able to create good music into appreciating good music more. Now I have transitioned from the girl that screams lyrics at the top of her lungs in the name of singing to a serial music addict. Nothing has changed, please.

I have explored several genres of music, and every time I discover a new artiste that resonates with me, the pleasure is similar to what I feel when I find money in the pocket of my old jeans. I get drowned in this new treasure, and it’s like I’m thrown into a frenzy as I relentlessly seek out everything this new artiste has to offer. Every music lover can relate to these moments, these moments that draw you in because these songs make you feel seen and it's as if the song was written for you and you alone. It's a voice that whispers, “you are not alone”.

I'm literally getting flashbacks of crying to some of these songs. Crazy stuff.

You know what is more beautiful than finding an artiste that sings about all your messed up feelings and validates your emotions? It's finding someone that shares your music taste. This right here is a soul connection.

Have you ever met a stranger and discovered that they shared your music taste? The feeling of excitement that rushes through you, the instant attraction that creates a bond between you and said stranger. I have felt this bond first-hand and I can say that these bonds last longer than the ones formed over sports or politics.

So, the next time you meet a girl or guy at a party that loves the artistes you love, pay more attention to them. That could possibly be your soulmate.

Despite the fact that I have zero musical talent, I'm still holding out hope. When there is life, there is hope, right? So I feel like if I can possibly clinch a guy that can sing, then maybe my children will have these amazing voices. Here's the deal, if you know a fine man with a beautiful voice, link us up. He could be the man for me, no?

Music is one of my love languages, I like to share music with people I love and right now I feel like sharing all my playlists with you (this is my not-so-subtle way of telling you that I love you).

I like to think I'm an organised person. When I want to listen to a particular artiste, I don't want to get interrupted by another artiste. So what do I do? I create a playlist for the artiste. But I have some heterogeneous (this is the first word I could think of) playlists that I could share.

I don't know why, but I can't add links to my newsletter, and it's so annoying because I have seen people do it. But I will just drop the link to these playlists in the comment section (download Substack if you haven't)

If you don't use Spotify, I'm sorryyy. You can just preview the songs and download them personally.

Let me know what you think about the songs, and music generally in the comments too. I hope you enjoy listening to these songs as much as I do.

Happy New Year to youu. Be the best version of yourself this new year. Till I write to you again, byeeee.

Write to me when you can.❤
